How to Encode Videos for iPhone or iPod on any Unix using ffmpeg

Imagine what? I’m a big fan of the iPhone/iPod touch for mobile entertainment and since I’m also a big fan of the commandline, I of course want to use ffmpeg for video conversion.
But… I’ve been looking for a working ffmpeg config for serveral months now. There were issues with Medibuntu’s version of ffmpeg for Ubuntu Hardy (or at least I had a lot of issues), there were issues with iTunes’ crazy restrictions, there are dozens of (non) working ffmpeg configs on the web… so I just want to share my config with you. How to Setup WebDAV and MySQL Authentication using Apache2

FTP is depracted. It’s been designed back in the days when the Internet consisted only of a few Computers. It’s not Firewall friendly (there are some hacks to get it through today’s Firewalls though) and should not be used any longer. Especially because the standard FTP protocol sends your password in clear-text across the net. Read more…

How to Backup MySQL using AutoMySQLBackup

Have you ever had a hard disk or server failure and lost important docs? Well… I had.

I’ve been looking for a MySQL backup solution for a few days now, found many scripts, but only one that fits all my needs (Separated daily/weekly backups of all my databases, automatic backup rotation and network support): AutoMySQLBackup. Read more…

A few thoughts from a McDonalds restaurant

Consider this post as a place holder. I was just a little bit bored waiting half of the day, wanted to fill up this blog and play around with WordPress on an iPhone a bit.

01:30pm: Well… I’m currently sitting in a McDonalds at Frankfurt Hauptwache eating lunch (tried the new “Grande Picante” menue… tastes like poo) and am thinking to myself: Uh that fat guy to my left really needs another bigmac!
I’m a little bored because I still have to wait 30 minutes until my next acupuncture session and I’m too lazy to go Shopping.
01:50pm: A lot of time has passed writing the few lines above. Have you ever tried to write a longer text on an iPhone? Yes? Then you do know how much Apple’s auto-correction SUCKS! Took me almost 30 minutes to write this meaningless post. Apple: you as a leader of innovations totally failed in this point!!!
01:55pm: Gotta leave for my appointment now. Let’s see how much it hurts to get a bunch of small needles Into the back :) Uh… haven’t seen the crush of people waiting for a free chair.
03:05pm: 45min later… Got rid of about 20 needles. Who ever said acupunctures won’t hurt is a liar! It did hurt. Now I have to wait another 20 f*cking minutes for my train home.
03:55pm: I’m still here… 30min after the f*cking 20min I mentioned earlier. My train hasn’t arrived and it doesn’t seem like the next one will. A fire somewhere in the tunnel… Ahhh hey wait the nice voice from above just announced something like … attention please S2 approaching at rail two.
04:15pm: Mhhh… Train arrived in Hofheim only two minutes delayed and I even catched my bus home.
05:00pm: Theeeeere we go… I’m home.

Did you enjoy reading this crap? If I were you I would not.

Blogging about this Blog

Come on guys ‘n dools are you kidding me? This blog is up for less than two days and cystats (great plugin btw.) shows me more than thousand hits! I know who did it… yeah I mean YOU. Please use another site like Google (link if you didn’t know *G*) to test your dos scripts. Why do you even have time for crap like that at work? ;)

Many of you also mailed me something like “Where are all your howtos!? Please post them!!!” HELLO?!? Do you even read what I write????
As I wrote in my first post I lost them all and am a little busy these days, BUT I already drafted my thoughts about MySQL Backups AND I am just doing some research about an (advanced) home-user backup strategy and will post the results soon. Pleaaaaseeee don’t ask me when it will be published, just subscribe to my RSS-Feed and visit this blog once a day or so.

Nevertheless thank you all for remaining faithful to my site and keep commenting!!! I read them and I reply whenever I have some spare time. (Maybe at school? ;) )

In this sense… gn8

Ladies and Gentleman attention please! Restricted-Area accounts

I’ve just restored the restricted area. But as I said in my previous post I lost my databases, so I also lost your account data. Drop me a mail if you think you need a new one. But please keep in mind that this site sill runs at my home… connected by a bleeding fast DSL connection with an impressive speed of 3000kbps.

This post has been written in Frankfurt’s Central Station. Understand the post subject now? ;)

Aaaaaaaaaaaand I’m back!

The long months full of pain and tears finally have an end. ;) My blog is back, though without much content yet.
As you could have read here I had some trouble with my hoster this spring, lost my domainname, my database, my posts, my howtos, my uploaded media, your comments. My backups were also stored on my hosters backup-space… don’t blame me! Cheap hosters just SUCK!

Many of you wanted me to blog in english and I always replied… hell why my english isn’t that good and it’s a pain in the ass to dig out these vocabulary. But as you can see (do you?) I try to.

Unfortunately I’m a little busy at the moment, but I already know what the next genius (just kidding) howto will be about: Deploying a backup strategy for an average Joe’s webspace.

Well… got a train to catch, next post to be published from an ICE.
